As General Manager of the Topeka ScareCrows (Central Hockey League) from 1997-2000 and, along with National Sports Services, I was charged with introducing hockey to a brand new market. I had the opportunity to work closely with the firm in the establishment and on-going operations of the ScareCrows, as NSS had an ownership interest and management services agreement with the team.
Collectively, we were able to establish a franchise that became a model for other League members. Utilizing programs developed by NSS, we implemented detailed procedures to track the performance of the organization and its personnel.
The ScareCrows merchandise operation was highly successful with a broad product line of quality products. We were proud that our community relations operation "set the bar" for other teams in the League. The marketing plans implemented were thorough and creative in driving attendance. Our focus on customer service created a high rate of client retention and the NSS contact management system provided for on-going cultivation of new customers and up-grading of existing clients. Through an intensive program of ticket and advertising sales, we were able to produce strong and growing results.
I was selected as the General Manager of the Year in the ScareCrows second season in the Central Hockey League in large part via the hard work of the staff and the successful programs developed by National Sports Services.

Fresno Falcons Professional Hockey Club
Upon acquiring the Fresno Falcons professional hockey club of the West Coast Hockey League I made the decision to retain National Sports Services. I did so because of the success of NSS in managing and consulting with professional sports franchises I had witnessed both by reference and first hand.
When I took over the Falcons, the organization was in disarray. The team was in last place, the front office staff consisted of four full-time employees and assorted interns, morale was low, games had already been canceled or postponed, and the image of the team in the community was that of an unprofessional and lackluster organization. The only positive was that we had nowhere to go, but up.
National Sports Services worked to help put in place:
- A new, and more marketing savvy General Manager
- New accounting, budgeting and database management systems
- Several new, highly qualified front office employees while also enhancing our current staff
- New marketing and sales plans including new ticketing structures and packages, advertising campaigns that encompassed all forms of media, new corporate sponsor packages and plans, and new community outreach and awareness plans
